Of the multiple handguns in my collection for sport and personal protection, the Ruger SP 101 is the gun of choice I put in my wife's night stand. When things go bump in the night there is no thinking, no safety , no racking a round - just point, squeeze the trigger and it shoots every time after 800+ rounds! Additionally the Ruger SP 101 is a stronger framed 357 than the "other brand" I carried for years. If I was told I could only keep 1 of my handguns for protection, conceal carry and home defense, THIS is the one I would choose, Never worry about FTF's, where is the safety, don't have to pull the slide to load a round. Simply stated - it just works everytime! Yes it only has five rounds and my carry weapon has seventeen, but without question, the SP 101 WILL FIRE EVERYTIME!

I wanted a simple to use home defense gun that me or my wife can grab when something goes bump in the night. As much as I love a semi-auto pistol, I see the value of a revolver if ever awaken suddenly in a dark room late at night. No over thinking required, just grab and go! After much research I decided on the SP101 based on being able to shoot 38 Special or 357 Magnum, I wanted stainless as I live in a humid coastal area so I hope the finish may do better long term and this gun my sit a long time without shooting. I decided on the DOA hammer version thinking if I ever need to walk my property the hammer will not snag on my coat pocket. I decided on the short 2.25" barrel so it will fit in a coat pocket. However, after owning this gun the heavy weight makes it not the most ideal pocket gun as its heavy but it works just perhaps not the best CC gun. I suggest try it and hold it yourself. I am okay with the weight as I'm old school and like a heavy gun and the .357 has a punch and I feel I need a heavy gun with that ammo. At the range being a short barrel I find it far from being the best on target gun but based on why I wanted this gun I do like it. If I was to shoot this gun more often I may would consider a replacement larger grips but I like the feel okay now but hurts a little after 50 rounds of .357. I have not shot 38 Special but thinking .38 may be a bit easer on the hand. The gun looks to be built well and I know it will fire every time! I look at this gun as a good insurance policy, I hope I never have to use it but if and when I do, I can count on it to do what it was designed to do.
