Smith & Wesson J-Frame revolvers have had your back since 1950. These small revolvers were designed to fire a full power round and are as simple and easy to use as they are reliable. Available in various calibers and with three diverse hammer designs, it is no surprise that the Smith & Wesson J-Frame has become the most popular, small-frame, defense revolver on the market. The Smith & Wesson model 317, debuted in 1997, as part of the Air Weight series of revolvers. Built on an aluminum-alloy J-Frame and chambered in .22 Long Rifle, this lightweight revolver is small enough to be carried inside a hunter or fisherman’s kit bag, as its name suggests.

Features:

  • Aluminum alloy frame and cylinder
  • Stainless steel barrel
  • HI-VIZ fiber optic green front sight
  • Adjustable rear sight

I purchased this S&W 317 because it is a J-frame 22LR. I can practice my revolver technique inexpensively and longer due to low recoil. My current carry guns are either a S&W 642 or a S&W 640 Pro. Although I practice with both carry guns with carry ammo (38 Special/357 Magnum, respectively), I can get a lot of range time in with this similarly sized 22.

This is a well-made, beautiful gun. It is so light it is hard to believe but is still has a solid feel in your hand. With 8 round capacity it is hard to beat.

This is actually the 4th 317 I’ve owned and I’m determined to keep this one. Surprisingly accurate and easy to shoot for such a lightweight gun. A perfect companion for the trail, the woods, or the range. The double action pull is stiff but experience with S&W revolvers has shown that it will smooth out. The single action pull is light, as in think about pulling and “bang!”. Smith .22 revolvers are not cheap but you are buying quality, and their customer service is tops in the … Read More

accurate and reliable, lightweight back up or backpack gun. with CCI stingers has better MV than 22 mag semi auto 4 inch due to.true 3 inch barrel. Always goes bang.8 rounds, nice #.

It iS a very nice revolver. Trigger pull is great both ways and you can stage the double action pull easily. I do not dry fire this gun and have no snap caps but use spent casings if I need to. I disassembled the gun and it was pristeen internally. S&W is a Quality operation and this revolver is a winner in every respect.

I wanted a lt wt 22 for carrying on the tractor on the farm. Got attacked one time by a mangy fox without even a shovel. Jumped on the tractor. This little 22 I carry in my Carhartt pants or coat since at times a holster gets it the way. I carry on an empty chamber. You do not even know you have it on you. Also if it get dirty just spray it own--no chance for a jam if it drops in the mud. More pricey than low end revolvers but this is a tool for me. Wish I knew about the LTWT sooner.

Great little gun. Shoots well. Price is a little high. One thing I noticed is that certain brands of 22 are more difficult to extract than others. Keep it clean and it will not fail you.

Easy trigger, great sight. Ammo gets a bit sticky after 100 rounds but cleaning rEsolves the issUe. Was a but pricey but needed one and was available. I don’t regret the decision. SW quality revolver.

I already own a S&W 317 and love it. It has been used a lot and seeking a new one. I didnt get this one yet though. It was on order after coming off backorder, and the order got cancelled a couple of weeks later and refund issued. Still waiting, but these are great little .22 handguns and very easy to carry. Very light weight and very accurate for a short barrel revolver.

Nice a light not a burden to throw in to back pac pocket. In sun the sight lights up great. The v notched rear sight kinda cradles the “dot” and it allows a quick sight alignment. I like a square notch to a square front post for more precise alignment but that’s kinda nit picky and it doesn’t make that much difference

Excellent little revolver. Very handy. Surprisingly accurate. Grips a little small. Good sights. Double action is a little heavy. Single action a little creepy. Trigger got better after a couple hundred rounds.

I ordered this gun, went and picked it up at Sportsman’ Warehouse. The next day we headed for our gun club’s indoor range. Right out of the box it was almost accurate. With slight adjustments of the sights, it shot accurately. We intend to buy a Crimson Trace laser for it. It’s what I’d call a “little honey.” I love it.

This gun has a good feel and is accurate. Also like the sights. The alloy on the barrel and cylinder looks a little different than the rest of the gun so it's maybe not as pretty as my other S&W revolver. But that doesn't affect performance. Nice gun.

Great price; fast delivery from Guns.com. This is a lightweight, 22lr go anywhere handgun with the capability of 8 rounds. Enough for most uses while hiking, camping and other outside activities. No for pocket carry rather to put in a pack or belt holster. The extreme lightweight will mean you will almost forget you are carrying it.

Great little kit gun. This will be coming with my on trips into the mountains. It is very light so it’s easy to add to a pack.

It matches it's description as a "kit gun" perfectly. Super light weight, small and a revolver, it fits in my tool boxes working on my farm. It's quick and pretty accurate. Great for varmints and copperheads or just fun to plink.
