Not made as a conversion, the 1872 Open Top was its own model, chambered for the .44 rimfire cartridge. Some arms students believe that the Open Top, which was only produced from 1872-1873, was made to misdirect any competition producing a metallic cartridge handgun, while the revolutionary 1873 model was being developed. Nonetheless, it was a welcome addition for anyone wanting a newly manufactured, self-contained metallic cartridge handgun, rather than a conversion from a percussion arm, during the last years of the cap and ball revolvers’ production. Later production Open Tops were made with 1860 Army-sized grips. Due to its limited run of only around 7,000 guns, coupled with the hard use many of these sixguns were put through on the frontier, original examples of the 1872 Open Top are among the more desirable and difficult to obtain firearms collectibles. Cimarron’s 1872 Open Top Army, like the original revolver in their collection it was reproduced from, combines the sleek, graceful lines of the caplock sixguns of the 1860s with the convenience of a modern metallic cartridge revolver.

Very well-made. Fit and finish is excellent. Great attention to detail and Design. One thing I don't understand is why they put the special safety on the hammer. In theory it seems like a very good idea but the need to use a screwdriver to turn it on and off would only be useful if you're storing the gun.

Just like the previous Cimarron pistol (.357 El Malo), this pistol is a work of art. Unequaled workmanship, this thing is museum quality. I am sure I will buy more Cimarron firearms.

Seems well made, nice finish, shoots quite accurate out of the box. The barrel assembly fit way too tight on mine. I had a hard time getting the barrel off and could not get it back together after shooting and cleaning at the range so I had to do some hand filing on it. Best to have it on half-cock when taking it down for cleaning. Very tight clearances but works well now.

I have loved these guns since I was a kid. I bought an Uberti black powder Navy revolver 40 years ago and always wanted a cartridge version. This gun is well made and shoots better than I hoped, very intuitive. Only knock is it does not have that distinctive three click cocking sound my old Colts do. Other than that I love it and price from GAG was way less than anywhere else.

largest barrel-cylinder gap i've ever had on a revolver, and there was no way to snug it up. i had to do extensive work on this one to correct that horrendous gap and endshake. i'd only buy another because uberti is the only one making them and because i know how to work on them.

It's a fun fun. I received it yesterday and did a thurough cleaning. The finish is excellent with great bluing and case hardening. The wood to metal fit is perfect. A quick stop at the range was great. It functioned flawlessly but had a heavy trigger pull with slight ruffness. It's a great gun for cowboy action shooting.

Great replica! Looks wanna works just like the old one would. Fired it probably 30-40 times with 3 different load/ bullet variations. Really pleased with the feel and accuracy. I will be buying another cimarron soon.

I love this and the other Uberti or Cimarron revolvers that I own, I love shooting it, it just feels really good and does not "kick" bad at all! It is very accurate! I take it with me out in the field and go to the range every chance I get! I have run boxes of 250 grain Name Brand ammo through it with no problems at all. All my friends and family that have shot it say they just love it! I think its great that I can own a piece of American History at an affordable price! I have one that is a 38
