2 years agoAfter many years of slug gun hunting with a variety of rifled cantilever barreled slug guns ranging from pumps to semi autos I made the switch to a bolt action slug gun. The switch to the Savage Arms 220 was driven by the inaccuracy of my previously owned guns and the fact that Savage 220 is built to the specs of the Savage model 111 bolt action rifle. Accuracy in shooting is now synonymous with Savage rifles and therefore should translate to the 220 shotgun platform. To date I have sighted in my new 220 to shoot 3 inches high at 100 yrs and the groups are 1.5 inches with 2 2/3 sabot slugs. The Savage documentation recommends 3 inch sabot slugs but I have been unable to purchase this specific manufactures slugs this late in the season. The groupings are satisfactory, the trigger is excellent, the gun is light, the scope base is solid and the gun is very responsive. It shoots more like a rifle than a shotgun. I look forward to fine tuning and improving the groupings once I get the 3 inch slugs. As it stands now I believe the the Savage Arms 220 slug gun is an improvement over most pump and semi auto slug guns with cantilever rifled barrels.

2 years agoThe 12 gauge was on my wishlist this past Christmas and the wife came through big time. I had it out at the range twice now. The range was only 50 yds max. The 212 was a beast- accurate after sighting it in. My brother in laws who never shot a gun before was able to get 1-2 inches away from the bullseye. Fun gun.

2 years agoI know that without pictures it didn't happen. However I bought this shotgun earlier this year and just got the chance to test it. I bought 6 types of slugs to test it. Winchester Supreme Elite, Dual Bond, Partition Gold, and Remington AccuTip, all three inch. I got similar results with all three, first two shots touching and the third about 2 inches to the left of the group. It was not a real good day for shooting as it was over 90 and no shade where I was shooting. Gun never got the chance to really cool. Regardless of this, all the above slugs grouped close to each other. On a whim I shot one of each and got a group the size of my hand at 100 yards. I also fired the Lightfield Hybrid EXP. It grouped well also but higher then the other. I would not feel bad shooting any of the slugs mentioned. There was not a real winner on paper. Since I have them I will shoot the accutips at deer this fall. I am extremely pleased so far with the purchase. Only thing of concern and I knew this, you really have to work the bolt to extract and eject the hull. Not a problem however. I work bolts pretty vigorously anyway.

2 years agoI bought the Savage 220 (20 gague) slug gun and put a Leupold Ultimate Slam Muzzle-loader/Shotgun scope on it. The third type of slug I tried on it was the Winchester 3 inch Partition Gold (260 grain) and got a one inch 3 shot group at 100 yards. Can't wait to take it hunting.

2 years agoBought the savage 220 last season for deer hunting. Mounted a Leupold VX-1 and shooting Federal 2 3/4 trophy copper solids. Shot deer at 60/80/ and 110yds. All dropped on the spot. This combination is accurate out to 175yds on the range (1 in. groups). Amazing for a slug gun!

2 years agoI purchased a Savage 220 3 years ago. I bought the camo scope combo. With minor sighting in I have nothing but good to say about the gun! Upon reading some reviews on ammo I chose the Remington Accutip 3". Target practice out to 150 - 200 yards was amazing! I couldn't believe the groups I was able to attain with a shotgun! Since purchasing, I've shot 3 deer with them. None of them going more than 30 yards after the shots and all complete pass through shots. I have never shot with such confidence with a shotgun and look forward to many more years hunting with this gun!

2 years agoI really like the gun but the Weaver scope that comes with the gun is junk. I took it out hunting and I had a hard time finding the deer in the scope. She was in a little patch of small trees and it took me a while to figure out my shot placement. I will be replacing the scope before I use it again. I have tried all types of ammunition and everyone requires you to "Man Handle" the bolt when ejecting the ammo. As long as you remember this the gun works perfectly.

1 year agoI have been hunting deer for over 30 years. I started out with the old slug guns and yes I did bag my fair share of deer with the old standby. As soon as Savage put this new style slug shotgun on the market I was lucky enough to try one. I shot both the 12 and 20. I found for the type of hunting I do, I live in MA, yes that anti firearm state, the 20 gauge was plenty powerful enough and actually seemed more accurate. I used a Nikon scope and at 100 yards was getting 1.5 inch groups off the bench. My first time out with this shotgun I was able to take down a deer on my second day out. The slug passed clear through the deer dropping it in its tracks. Since then I have bagged over 10 deer with this slug gun. 5 stars isn't enough IMO

1 year agoI bought a 212 last year after 30 years of putting a slug barrel on a bird gun every fall. Out of the box the action was very tight and shells wouldn't eject. The clip was very hard to engage to the gun. I had to hit it pretty hard to get it to click in place. After 40 rounds to sight in the new scope, the action softened up but it would not eject shells at all. I spent a lot of time understanding how it should eject and figured out the ejector pin that is supposed to make the shell kick out of the action was installed upside-down. I called Savage and they just wanted me to send the gun to them for service. I didn't have time for that before deer season so I disassembled the gun and turned the ejector pin over. It now works fine.It turns out the upside-down ejector pin was also the reason for the clip not inserting properly. Very disappointing to see such poor quality control from Savage but I am happy with the gun now.

1 year agoBought it at end of last season, put it in a case and put it away. Brought it out to sight it in just this month and while it is very accurate, it WILL NOT feed from the magazine. Called Savage arms and they sent me a new magazine - still won't feed. Tried 2 different shell brands. I'll try one more then it's going back to cabelas.

1 year agoThis is why I gave up on savage fire arms. I bought the 220 for my new property this year on 09/19/2019. The reviews were good so I spent the money on it. I took it out two days ago to site it in at the range and immediately it wouldn’t feed rounds into the chamber. It does shoot accurately but again it doesn’t feed they hang up high. I tried 3 different types of shells. Do they even have Quality control and test these guns. I found it interesting when I went on Cabela’s web site and found the most recent review with the same problem. Now I have to send it in to a gun smith, they offered me a new magazine but that’s what they gave the last guy.

1 year agoJust bought a 220 XP last month. The gun comes with weaver base & scope, I want to replace the base by DNZ Game Reaper. After removed the weaver scpoe & rings, I found that all 4 base screws were stripped. The 2 screws of front base were "full" stripped, just like hole. The 2 screws of rear base were "half" stripped, bottom still fit 3/32" hex key. The front ring screw was a little bit stripped and a scratch on receiver but It doesn't matter.

1 year agoAt first the rounds were getting stuck in the receiver it will not load the 3rd round, then after about 10 - 15 shots i tried again and is working perfect, now it load the 3rd round very smooth, I love this gun...

1 year agoThe rating would be zero. I tried to purchase a firearm online and was still calling on that firearm a month and a half later to be told " we have no idea where it is" . No emails or phone calls they just let it go. Never purchase another online through them.

1 year agoI bought this 3 months ago and my background check still has not cleared. I bought 2 other guns since and cleared just fine. The store screwed up my background check. I am still waiting 50 days later.

1 year agoI bought this about a month before the IL shotgun season. I purchased the 20 gauge with the rail to mount a scope. The local BPS didn't have a scope available for a shotgun but I remembered I friend of mine mention he had one that he wanted to sell. It took me a while to get it sighted in since I didn't have much experience using a scope, but eventually I figured it out. This was the fourth year I've bow hunted, but was going to be my first shotgun deer hunt since 1973 when I was a senior in high school. Once season opened on Nov. 20, it lasted all of 27 minutes when an 11 point buck walked in front of me. One shot with my new 220 Savage and he went about 30 yards before going down. I can't say enough good things about this gun.

1 year agoThis gun is a tack driver. Groups less than 1" at 100 yards. Can't wait to get to a range to shoot at longer distances. I have never been able to shoot slugs out of a shotgun with this accuracy.

1 year agoPicked up gun on Tuesday, took 5 shots to make sure dialed in. Hunted on Thursday and took a nice buck at 110 yards and doe at 90 yards. Light gun with very little recoil....enjoy shooting it! Going to be great gun for 12 year old grandson to shoot.....if I don't keep for myself :)

1 year agoThis gun shoots amazing and i love the accutrigger. Only problem is it has problems cycling 2 3/4 slugs. I read online that its a very common problem and you will have to send it back to savage to fix the issue.

1 year agoNot fair to rate 5 stars yet. Had to send bolt back for broken extractor. Customer service is all over it though. Initial impression is-this thing is awesome. Can't wait to throw some rounds through it.
