2 years agoShowed up the other day, no scratched, dinged or mangled wood. action is stiff but will smooth over time, had to do some light sanding of the bolt as it was a little rough. Bolt handle has a few marks but doesn’t matter really. Feeds and ejects reliably and the sights and tapped holes are straight and inline with the barrel. Can’t wait to carry this thing in the woods next fall

2 years agoI got the model with the hardwood stock with iron sights , One of the best things I’ve done to improve my overall shooting is the practice with a 22 . Savage mark two has a design similar to more expensive bolt action rifles . I recommend this rifle

1 year agoWARNING - THIS IS A LONG, IN DEPTH, (T.M.I.) REVIEW OF THE SAVAGE 93R17 and .17HMR!! TL:DR at the bottom but its worth the read it if you are still debating on buying a .17HMR or .22LR. I purchased a new Savage 93R17 FXP (with the scope) about 6 months ago when my teenage daughters expressed an interest in learning how to shoot. I had owned this gun in the past...but sadly, the persons who broke into my home 15 years ago took it from me. (Such a sad loss). I loved that gun, and immediately knew I HAD to get another one for teaching my girls. And boy...was I RIGHT!! When you are talking about purchasing the Savage 93R17 rifle, you HAVE to talk about ammunition first...because it fires the .17HMR. Then you have to ask yourself, why the .17HMR instead of a .22? That is an internal brainstorming session that every person considering purchasing this rifle needs to have... The simple answer is this: Hornady designed the .17HMR for 200-yard varmint hunting, and from all accounts, (including myself) it has met AND exceeded all expectations....and in my opinion, the Savage 93R17 is THE BEST money can buy to compliment the design of the ammo. PROS: - The only difference in the FX and the FXP model is the scope that comes with it. No, may not the best scope out there, and may not be as powerful as others, but it works wonderfully. I love that the rifle comes out of the box with the scope already mounted by the factory. If this is your first rifle, or are buying for a new/learning shooter, or even debating on it, I can tell you with 100% honestly: GO WITH THE SCOPE! It is absolutely worth it and takes the experience of shooting this rifle to an 11! - This is NOT a "child's sized gun". While it's light enough for younger shooters, the arrangement of the handle, grip, safety and trigger are very comfortable... even for smaller hands. The AccuTrigger is a nice feature to have as well. I have not yet had to fiddle with adjusting it yet, as the default was just fine for our purposes. - It has such a satisfyingly smooth bolt action, which makes it an even better training rifle. In my opinion, the bolt action is actually better to learn on, as it gives the learner time to take stock of whats going on, and the manual manipulation of the bolt drastically lowers the chance of an accidental discharge. - While it is only a .17HMR round, it has the look and sound of a much bigger rifle, without all the kickback. - Once you calibrate the scope, it is EXTREMELY accurate!! The .17HMR rounds are "ballistically superior" more aerodynamic than a snub nosed .22 round; which makes them travel farther and faster down range; which in turn makes target shooting competitions very easy and fun for both beginners and experienced shooters. - it is very easy to disassemble for cleaning and care - very sturdy and well built with simple but beautiful design of the stock that incorporates grip exactly where you need it. - There are nubs on both ends of the stock for mounting a bi-pod, lighting/laser, or sling. I installed a bi-pod on the front mounting nub of my own rifle, and the accuracy just increases with the added stability. It was very easy to do, and only took less than a minute to ensure a snug fit. - For what it is and what it is designed to do, it does it perfectly. My daughters and I have squeezed off a couple hundred rounds in a single target shooting session without any issues. - This bears repeating: ITS EXTREMELY ACCURATE!! I have split standing toothpicks in half, outdoors at 100+ yards with this rifle. - In fact, just to illustrate my point about the perfect training & all around fun this rifle is, I will let you in on a secret: my 13 year old daughter actually out-shot me on paper targets at our last outing... 20 shots each at 100 yards, she got more rounds through the inner ring than me. And it was only her 3rd time out. I trained her well, but she took the shots. I was a proud papa that day! - Its in a class of firearms meant for "killing varmints and small rodents". But don't let that fool you. This is a deadly accurate rifle...and I mean DEADLY accurate; even for larger animals. I have used this rifle with great effect on smaller animals (moles, squirrels, rats, etc)...but I have also taken down slightly larger pesky animals, (raccoons, skunks, opossums) with a single shot. A well placed shot can also take down coyotes, foxes and other medium sized animals. Depending on the grain load, the .17HMR has a muzzle velocity from 2350fps up to 2650fps; and still carries 1757fps in a flat trajectory at 100 yards. Anything unlucky enough to be struck with that projectile is not going to have a good day. Then again, I also have first hand knowledge that a round from this rifle will kick a soda can 2-3 meters in the air and obliterate clay pigeons at 100+ yards. CONS: - In regards to the functionality, esthetics and mechanical workings of the Savage 93R17 rifle, there are NO CONS. - However, the manufacturer only included one 5 round magazine in the box. This is a problem easily fixed though. - Most rifle cleaning kits do not come with a small enough rod to clean down the inside of the barrel. Some improvising may be needed there. - The .17HMR round is a little more difficult to locate. Its not as common as say, a 22LR. While it tends to be a little more expensive than a .22LR, what you get from paying more is the increase distance & accuracy I mentioned. RECOMMENDATIONS: - If you are debating between a .17HMR and a .22LR rifle, I would say the biggest deciding factor to me would be what you are going to use it for...if its for more utilitarian pursuits and actually killing varmints and small rodents, then get a .22LR rifle. You can throw more rounds at them for MUCH cheaper. If you want to use the rifle for shooting small game at a greater distance, and also have much more fun and long distance target practice, the .17 is where its at. - I strongly suggest procuring a couple of aftermarket magazines. There are 10 round clips available for this rifle. You will find that while it is still bolt action, 5 rounds goes REALLY quickly. (TL:DR) FINAL THOUGHTS: In my opinion, the Savage 93R17 is THE BEST OPTION that money can buy to throw a .17HMR round down range. Once you have your own, you'll understand why. The Savage 93R17 is the perfect gun for beginners, and experienced shooters can really test their skills....all the while having SO much fun. After having purchased two of these rifles, I can honestly say I have NEVER had any buyers remorse and every time I shoot it, it brings a smile to my face. To this day they have performed flawlessly. With the proper care I give them, I have never had ANY mechanical or functional issues with the Savage 93R17 at the range. The return on investment I get is measured in pure joy in watching my daughters learn and love target shooting. We love this rifle, and we hope you will too.

1 year agoI can hit a ground squirrel at a 100 yards no problem and I love the Chrome. The only downside is there is only one screw holding it all together I wish it had a clamp on the barrel.

1 year agoThe first time I pull the trigger the gun felt solid, took little ammo to get it hitting dead on every shot out to 150 yards. It very light and easy to carry. I will be shooting this rifle a lot.

1 year agoThis is and always has been one of the best .22 rifles you can buy but this is way over priced. I just bought one two days ago for $120.00 cheaper. Shop around. Yes it was the sporter deluxe not the carbine

1 year ago60 years ago,my first rifle was a single shot version of this beauty and little has changed since then.Solid feel, well balanced, very accurate, and exceptional value for the money. The Accutrigger is a wonderful feature and performs exactly as advertised. Also, the fact that is manufactured in Ontario is a bonus if parts or service is ever required.A couple of small gripes: Initially, the action of the bolt was a bit rough but smoothed out after a few hundred rounds. Also, the magazines seem a bit flimsy, however, they work fine and are readily available.Try putting some CCI CB Shorts through this gun...firearm accuracy with virtually no noise whatsoever....instant smiles!! All in all,you cannot go wrong, especially at this price point. Buy a couple of Weaver mounts, slap on a 4X scope and you are ready for some serious plinking and target shooting.

1 year agoExtremely accurate for the price, emptied 2 boxes of Winchester m22 (1000r) in one sitting off a bipod @200 yds. Got a 2 inch group on a steel plate.

1 year agoI’ve had this gun for over 10 years now. After more than 5 thousand rounds, I’ve had never had a jam, no fail to eject, 1 fail to feed when the clip went bad and never once had a hang fire. Absolutely love this gun!

1 year agoShot a friends right handed model with upgraded peep sights and it was amazing. I’ve been waiting over a year now for a left handed model now and am wondering when they’ll be back in stock

1 year agoIts extremely lightweight, compact and surprisingly fast to set up. It is as very accurate especially for a knock down assembly. I love it. My only issue is why they did not make the storage compartment fully waterproof so the metal parts stay dry and afloat. It is worth the price and it is fun to shoot.

1 year agoNice little 22. Finish is bad on the stock, looks like it was rubbed constantly by packing or not dried. On the positive side some were worse looking than this one.

1 year agoOnly issue that I have noticed is the spring in the magazine should be stronger, at times will not push shell high enough to line up with the barrel.

1 year agoI'm not surprised this rifle has excellent accuracy since it's my fifth Savage. I got this for my grandson to join me on a prairie dog shoot. He just turned 11 years old and did more than his share of reducing the over population on the ranch we hunt. Since this model comes with a rifle scope I didn't expect it would live up to the accuracy expected, I was mistaken. It continues to produce sub-moa groups .

1 year agoSavage made a cheap one here stock is like plastic ...scope is junk..real disappointed !! My advice would be to spend a little more $$$ for better quality! This wont be the gun you get either!
